Farms and forest across the green Phobjikha Valley

Bhutan

Phobjikha Valley

Phobjikha is a broad, bowl-shaped glacial valley on the western side of the Black Mountains. From late October to February it is the winter roost of the endangered black-necked crane, and its farms, forests and nature trails are managed with the birds in mind. Gangtey Monastery, one of Bhutan's important Nyingma monasteries, overlooks the valley from a forested ridge.
